Room area calculator

How it is calculated

Room area is length times width. For an L-shaped or odd room, split it into rectangles, work out each one, then add them together.

Area = length × width

Example: a 12 ft × 15 ft room is 12 × 15 = 180 sq ft (16.7 m²). With 10% extra for cuts, buy 198 sq ft of flooring.

Common questions

How do I find the square footage of a room?

Measure the length and width in feet and multiply them. A 10 × 12 ft room is 120 sq ft. For an L-shaped room, measure each rectangle separately and add the totals.

How many square feet are in a square yard?

There are 9 square feet in a square yard (3 ft × 3 ft). Carpet is often sold by the square yard, so divide square feet by 9.

How much extra flooring should I buy?

Most installers suggest about 10% extra for cuts and mistakes, and 15% for diagonal or patterned layouts.
